We were all reminded of the power of money in 2008, when seemingly without warning, major American financial players crumbled to the tune of $700 billion dollars in government bailouts. This seemingly-local sub-prime crisis took down the world’s largest names in finance, and forced the nationalization of banks on both sides of the Atlantic. Countries’ economies shifted. Some countries even went bankrupt because of it. The weaknesses in our financial system are clearer than ever. Out of this pure weakness rose a white paper, simply titled: Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System. In it, author Satoshi Nakamoto presents a different view of how money could work: inclusive, participative, transparent, inexpensive, and, most importantly, not controlled by any one government, institution, company or even person. The premise of Bitcoin is total financial inclusivity, using the Internet. We believe in Satoshi Nakamoto’s vision. The flow of money has been restricted, controlled and manipulated by a small group of players for far too long. Digital currencies like Bitcoin are transforming these systems. The vision we share with our community is one where outdated, expensive and archaic technologies are transformed using digital currencies. We focus on micropayments. Bitcoin is the start.
Our mission is to enable a truly global economy by reducing economic disparity through the efficient and open transfer of value to and from each other. Together, as a strong and robust community, we hoist Bitcoin’s star and show that micropayments are a great use case for the technology. By showing what can be done today, that can’t be done by existing payment channels, we will work together to drive the mass consumer adoption of bitcoin, and educate and empower people to understand and use their money along the way. Without education, there can be no empowerment.
Our community and team day-dream about...
The day that a charity cites ChangeTip as the #1 source of funding... Helping with economic disparity as we enable money to flow from the have’s to the have-nots for a cause, project or business in another part of the world... A grandmother gifting money to her grandson over Facebook instead of by a cheque in the mail... Micro-crowdfunding that allows something meaningful to be built with community input... Receiving a note from a blogger, indicating that she is now able to quit her job and become a full-time writer because of her tips... A major news site switches to an ad-free experience in favor of charging micropayments per page view... A major brand stops advertising on Facebook in favor of incentivizing their users directly, using ChangeTip... Feeding homeless people using tips collected from people around the world who want to help...
We believe that the combination of digital currencies and social media (social payments) will pay off the long-held promises of micropayments. We believe we will look back in 5 years and wonder what we did before them, just as we do now with e-mail, social networking, cloud computing and other transformative technologies. We believe that micropayments will reduce friction (time, cost and cognitive load) around payments, and new human behaviours will be revealed.
Each of us come from a variety of different companies and life paths, and we all look for different factors in our work. We choose each other to create the ChangeTip community, because we are all connected by and driven by a strong sense of purpose in the world, and a craving for true, wide-reaching social impact. This is what drives us. We are obsessive. We are passionate. We want to positively impact the world. It is this collective vision that powers our work ethic and efforts. Our vision is to create a better connection between social impact and quality of life by enabling digital currencies through micropayments for the world. We infuse this energy into building products that delight, are easy to use and result in true education and financial empowerment for the world.
